Lawful J-1 Status: Program Rules, Reporting and Authorized Stay

Table of Contents
How Do You Maintain Lawful J-1 Status?
Keeping J-1 status means following your exchange program's rules and staying within your authorized period of admission.
Key Takeaways
- Follow the activities and category on your DS-2019, with the required sponsor approval.
- Maintain the required insurance and report contact changes within ten calendar days.
- A DS-2019 alone does not extend your authorized stay.
- Program document
- Valid DS-2019
- Insurance
- Required throughout program participation
- Contact changes
- Report within 10 calendar days
- Termination for just cause
- No post-completion grace period
Stay Within Your Program and Admission
Your activities must match the category and activity on your DS-2019. Work is limited to the activity listed there or allowed under your category's rules, with approval from your sponsor's Responsible or Alternate Responsible Officer.
Your sponsor helps keep your J-1 Visa documents valid. But a DS-2019 end date alone does not authorize a longer stay. To stay beyond your authorized admission period, you must apply to USCIS for an extension of stay, even if your sponsor has extended your program. See Program Extension and I-94 Record.

Insurance and Reporting
Maintain Health Insurance meeting 22 CFR § 62.14 throughout your program participation. Accompanying J-2 spouses and dependents must also have the required coverage.
Report changes to your phone number, email or actual US residence to your sponsor within ten calendar days. The same deadline applies to a site-of-activity change you are allowed to make without prior sponsor approval. It does not replace any required approval. Your sponsor updates SEVIS within ten business days of notification.

After Completion
The Grace Period is 30 days after your program end date or the four-year admission limit, whichever comes first, to depart or seek to maintain lawful status. If the program is shortened, the 30 days run from the new end date. The ordinary post-completion grace period does not permit work or continued exchange activities.

If Your Status Is in Question
Your sponsor advises you on program problems. Some violations can be corrected or considered for reinstatement; others cannot. If your sponsor ends your participation for just cause through Termination, it records this in SEVIS. You are expected to leave immediately, without the post-completion grace period.

FAQs
Does my visa expiring mean I must renew it while in the US?
Not if you are continuing your program and do not plan to travel outside the US. Visa renewal for travel and maintaining lawful status during your stay are different questions. See Visa Expiry & Travel.

The Bottom Line
Keep your program, documents, insurance and reports in order. An extended DS-2019 alone does not extend your authorized admission.
