The process
Six steps to your J-1 visa
From the first free eligibility check to your visa interview, we guide you through every step. This is the path as a Research Scholar, Professor, Specialist or Short-Term Scholar.
The six steps
Eligibility check
You send us your CV and a short description of the planned role at your host organization. We confirm the right category, free of charge and with no obligation.
Application in the Beacon portal
We open your application in the sponsor’s Beacon portal. You complete it and sign the program terms.
Host confirmation
Your host organization confirms the planned role.
Review and interview
We review all documents for accuracy. The sponsor then conducts a short interview with you.
Visa interview
Prepared for the consulate, you apply for your J-1 visa and travel to the USA.
Timing and requirements
- Lead time. Submit your complete application four to six weeks before your planned start.
- Processing. The sponsor reviews completed applications within about ten business days.
- Language. You need at least an intermediate level of English so you can follow the plan and daily life at your host organization.
You do not have to fight through portals and forms. We open the application, review the documents and guide you to your consulate appointment.
Get started
The first step is always the free eligibility check. Send us your CV and a short description of the planned role, and we get back to you with the result.
At VisaNerd we sponsor strictly within the rules of the US Department of State (22 CFR Part 62) and current BridgeUSA guidance. What you read here is how we actually sponsor and what we require. It is practical guidance from our team, not legal advice; we confirm your eligibility as your sponsor contact, and the final visa decision rests with the US consular officer.
