The DS-2019 Form
Your J-1 Certificate of Eligibility
You have your offer for an internship or training in the US. One document still stands between you and the program: the DS-2019. It is the official Certificate of Eligibility and the legal foundation of your J-1 visa. We run your sponsoring through every step, on your side, so it is issued cleanly and on time.
What is the DS-2019?
The DS-2019 is the Certificate of Eligibility for a J-1 visa. It is a record in the US SEVIS system that confirms you meet the program criteria, names your official sponsor, and fixes the exact dates and category of your stay. Without a DS-2019 there is no J-1 visa, and only an authorized sponsor can issue it.
We do not approve or refuse you, the designated sponsor does that and then issues the DS-2019, and the consular officer decides on the visa. What we do is prepare and manage your case so it stands up to that review. Go straight to a sponsor alone and a weak file simply gets rejected, with nobody in your corner.
What is on your DS-2019?
The form is short, but every field carries legal weight. These are the parts that matter most:
| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| SEVIS ID | Your unique number in the US tracking system, starting with N. |
| Category | Intern or Trainee. Interns usually stay shorter; the Trainee route allows up to 18 months. |
| Program dates | The exact start and end of your authorized stay. |
| Sponsor | The organization that vouches for you to the US government. |
| Program cost | The figure used to show your financial coverage for the stay. |
Your category is set from your profile, which we validate up front so the record certifies in SEVIS without friction.
Who issues it, and where do we fit in?
US sponsors are legally required to vet every application for compliance with State Department rules. They act as the regulator. The detailed pre-screening, the dossier, and the coordination with your US host sit with us as the authorized registration and management partner. The sponsor signs your DS-2019 once we have confirmed the quality of your file, and that is what keeps the approval rate at the consulate high.
Using our infrastructure directly means you skip middlemen who only forward paperwork without steering the process. You use our expertise to enter the official US system without losing time.
DS-2019 vs DS-7002
People mix these up constantly. They are two different documents that work together:
| DS-2019 | DS-7002 |
|---|---|
| Your certificate of eligibility for the program. | Your detailed training plan. |
| Proves you belong in the J-1 at all. | Proves the placement is training, not a job. |
| Issued by the sponsor in SEVIS. | Built with your host and reviewed by us. |
The DS-2019 is your general right to be in the program; the DS-7002 training plan is the functional script behind it. A clean DS-7002 is your best insurance against a refusal.

You get access to our portal and upload your passport and status documents as scans.
Host company compliance check

Certification and delivery

SEVIS fee and the English check
We keep your process lean by folding the extras into our service. The SEVIS fee, due for every record in the US system, is covered by us: we pay it and hand you the official receipt for your embassy appointment. For the required English proof, we verify your level during our mandatory call instead of sending you to pay for an external TOEFL or IELTS test, and our sponsors accept that confirmation for your visa.

Questions & Answers
At VisaNerd we sponsor strictly within the US Department of State exchange visitor regulations (22 CFR 62.22) and current BridgeUSA policy. What you read here is how we actually sponsor and what we require, not a general overview of other sponsors. It is practical guidance from our team, not legal advice; your eligibility is confirmed through us as your sponsor contact, and the final visa decision is made by the US consular officer.
