The J-1 Visa has two paths. One is for students and professionals early in their careers. The other, the one this page is about, is for experienced researchers, teachers and specialists. Four categories, one certified sponsor, one clear process.
What this is about
If you are already established in your career and want to research, teach or share your expertise in the USA, you do not need the path built for students. There is a separate branch of the exchange for experienced people. Within it we are your sponsor representative: we confirm your eligibility, guide your application and issue your DS-2019 at the end, which you use to apply for your visa.
Four categories cover the different plans, from a research stay of several years to a talk of just a few weeks. This page helps you find the right one and points you to a detailed article for each category.
Which category fits you
The quickest way to place yourself is to ask what you plan to do in the USA and for how long. This overview sets the four side by side. The details, requirements and waiting periods are in each article.

Research Scholar
You conduct research on a clearly defined project at a host in the USA. Teaching is allowed as a secondary activity.

The most common mistake is to confuse these paths with an internship or a traineeship. The difference lies in the direction. As an Intern or Trainee you come to learn, with a training plan and a fixed timeframe. As an experienced professional you come to contribute your existing knowledge, whether in research, in teaching or as an expert in your field.
A few things follow from that: there is no training plan as there is for Trainees, no minimum age, and depending on the category your practical experience counts more than a title. If you are unsure which of the two paths is right, we sort it out for you in the free eligibility check.
What applies to everyone
As different as the four categories are, a few things apply to each:
- A confirmed host in the USA is part of the application. If you do not have one yet, talk to us about the timing.
- You need at least an intermediate level of English, so you can follow the work and daily life on site.
- Research Scholar and Professor carry a twelve month bar before the start and a twenty four month wait before repeating, each with exceptions. Short-Term Scholar does not trigger these rules. The exact periods are in the article for your category.
The path to your visa
From the free eligibility check to the interview at the consulate there are six steps we walk with you. We open your application in the sponsor’s portal, review your documents and release your DS-2019 at the end. Plan four to six weeks before your start. What it costs
You pay one price by duration, from 3,900 euro, the same for all four categories. Included are the DS-2019, the SEVIS fee and a compliant health insurance for the full program duration.
